When Lewis was eight years old, he described himself in his diary.”I am like most boys of 8 and I am like Papy, bad tempered, thick lips, thin, and generaly wearing a jersey….. Hoora!”. At the age of fifty-five, Lewis described himself as’” tall, fat, rather bald, red-faced, double-chinned, black-haired, have a deep voice, and wear glasses for reading”.

Little Lea had a lot of spare rooms. Lewis and Warnie spent hours in the attic, creating their own fantasy worlds. They made up the complete history of an imaginary world that they named “Boxen”.

When Lewis was seven, his family moved to a new house in the country, on the outskirts of Belfast. Keeping with the British tradition of giving names even to rather ordinary homes, the Lewis house was called “Little Lea”. It was much bigger than their previous house.

Warnie had been in China when their father died. A few months later, after Warnie’s return, the brothers went to Little Lea on last time and ceremoniously buried their Boxen toys in the garden.

When Jack was nine, his mother became very ill. She died of cancer a few months later, leaving the family devastated. Many years later, Lewis returned to this painful period when he wrote The Magician’s Nephew about a boy whose mother in dying.
